HYDERABAD: What is the brand identity of the ‘decision making application’ developed by the Brazilian company ‘uTouch Labs’? Don’t fret if you haven’t got the answer. Neither did the six teams fighting a battle of wits in the regional finals of Tata Crucible Campus Quiz 2011 here on Sunday.

The poser was passed from end to end and finally tossed into the audience for a brilliant kid to grab it and utter the right answer, ‘Ask the Octopus’.

The loss of ‘runs’ – points in simulation of a cricket game – was amply made up by the teams through ‘power play’, in which they got 12 runs instead of six if they were right, and lost three if they were wrong.

Storehouses of information that they were, all the six teams scored points within the first two rounds, which in itself was a record according to the quizmaster Giri ‘Pickbrain’ Balasubramaniam.

However, the winner had to be one, and a team from the two representing the Indian School of Business had shown who it would be since the first round.

‘Stump Vision’, the round of visuals, ‘Tata World’, buzzer round with questions on Tata products, ‘Third Umpire’ with answers hidden among a maze of clues, and the ‘Slog Overs’ with 60 seconds and three clues for answer, were the other levels of the quiz.

Stiff competition prevailed for the runner-up position finally bagged by the team from VNR-VJIET.

Abhishek Nag and Vivek Sekar from ISB bagged the winner’s cash prize of Rs. 75,000 while Joice John and Shankar. T from VNR-VJIET received Rs. 35,000 from the hands of V. Rajanna, Vice-President and Regional Head of Tata Consultancy Services.

Finalists included two teams from Institute of Public Enterprise and one from Nalsar Law University.

In all, 108 teams from across the State participated in the quiz, organisers informed.

The winning team will take part in the national finals at Mumbai and compete with 23 other regional winners, they said.

Educational News: NO TAKERS FOR COMPUTER COURSES IN A.P

HYDERABAD: Even as counselling for engineering admissions is scheduled to begin from first week of July, several private engineering colleges, offering computer science and information technology streams, are expected to find it difficult to fill up the seats.
The trend of choices of subjects by students this year indicates a shift towards core engineering courses like electronics, electrical and mechanical engineering. At present, over 11,555 seats are available in the computer science engineering course in 174 colleges in the state.
Principal of the Osmania University College of Engineering prof D N Reddy said availability of jobs in information technology sector was going down with each passing day. He said the students were now opting for computer courses along with main engineering courses in core streams.
?With the OU scrapping bachelor in computer application (BCA) course this year, the trend is clear that many private engineering colleges are not going to get enough students for computer science and IT engineering courses this year,? Reddy said.
The Integrated Common Entrance Test (Icet-2002) conducted by the OU this month also gave a strong indication that computer related courses have very few takers in the state. The number of students appearing for the MCA through the Icet this year came down by 35 per cent.
However, the AP State Council for Higher Education (APSCHE) states that though the popularity of computer engineering has come down, filling the seats will not be a problem for the government as well as private colleges. APSCHE chairman prof C Subba Rao said with the application of computers practically in almost all fields, computer engineering just cannot be marginalised.
