  • No takers for MCA, MBA seats.

Around 159 MCA colleges which had no admissions after the first phase of ICET counselling are in danger of closure unless they can fill their seats during the second phase which ends on Tuesday.

According to the AP State Council of Higher Education, after the end of first phase counselling, 159 MCA colleges out of 634 colleges including 43 university colleges got no admissions. Out of a total of 31,181 MCA convener quota seats available, only 9,443 seats were filled up and 21,738 seats remained vacant after the first phase of counselling. Out of the total 634 colleges, only 129 MCA colleges got 100 per cent admissions. APSCHE chairman P Jayaprakash Rao told Express they were not the competent authority to take a decision to shut down colleges which got poor admissions. Rao said it is up to the All India Council for Technical Education to take a decision.

Though the MBA colleges fared better, a large chunk of MBA seats were still vacant after the first phase of counselling. Nine out of 937 MBA colleges including 51 university colleges got no admissions. 23,141 MBA seats out of 62,860 seats in the convener quota remained vacant after the first phase.

  • Trai raises SMS limit to 200 per day.

Telecom consumers will now be able to send up to 200 SMSes per day from a SIM, as against the earlier limit of just 100 SMSes per day imposed by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai).

“The authority has received representations from some of the service providers and consumers to increase the limit of 100 SMSes per day per SIM. The authority has considered these representations and decided to increase the limit of 100 SMSes per day per SIM to 200 SMSes per day per SIM,” Trai said in a statement on Tuesday.

To deter unsolicited SMSes by telemarketing companies, Trai had earlier restricted the number of non-commercial SMSes that can be send from a SIM to 100. There was no restriction on commercial messages sent through telemarketing companies registered with Trai.

The new cap of 200 SMSes per sim per day will be effective from Tuesday.
