At Harefield Hospital in West London, 19 - year ? old Debbie Leonard was being
prepared for one of the most complicated operations yet attempted in Britain ? heart and lung
transplant. A hole in her heart since her birth had caused blood to circulate through her lungs at
high pressure. This led to a thickening of the lungs, making it difficult for her to take in oxygen.
She could barely walk 100 metres with out becoming breathless. Now, after an eight-month wait,
a heart and lung donor had become available.
In a South London hospital 30 kilometres away, heart surgeon Magdi Yacoub waited for
the telephone call that would tell him Debbie was in the operation theatre. Nineteen months
earlier, the Egyptian-born doctor had performed Britain?s first heat-lung transplant. This one, on
July 3, 1985, was his fifteenth and the first in which donor and recipient were not in the same
hospital. To overcome the formidable problem posed by this separation, Yacoub had led his team
dead donor to support the transplant organs.
Now began four hours of intricate surgery by a team of more than 20 surgeons,
anaesthetists, nurses and technicians. Debbie?s heart and lungs had to be removed with
meticulous care, particularly when serving the nerves running down from the back of her neck;
the smallest slip of the knife could affect her breathing and swallowing, or paralyse her vocal
cords. Then the new heart and lungs had to be painstakingly connected. ?A beautiful sight ? a
perfect fit, ?murmured Yacoub as the stitches went in.
At 3 am Debbie was taken to intensive care. At 11 am the ventilation tube was extracted
from her throat and she was breathing naturally. Her new lungs were working perfectly ? and still
do.
