STRENGTH OF MATERIALS-I
(Civil Engineering)
Time: 3 Hours Max. Marks: 70
Note: 1. Question Paper consists of two parts (Part-A and Part-B)
2. Answer ALL the question in Part-A
--- Content provided by FirstRanker.com ---
3. Answer any THREE Questions from Part-B
PART-A
1. a) Define Poisson's ratio and Volumetric strain. [3M]
b) Define Resilience. [2M]
c) Define point of contra flexure. [2M]
d) Define Shear force and Bending moment. [3M]

e) Write the simple bending equation. [2M]
f) Define Torsion. [2M]
PART-B
2. a) A steel rod of 3cm diameter is enclosed centrally in a hollow copper tube of external diameter 5cm and internal diameter 4cm. The composite bar is then subjected to an axial pull of 45000 N. If the length of each bar is equal to 15cm, determine the stress carried by each bar and the amount of extension. Take E for steel = 2.1 x 105 N/mm2 and E for copper = 1.1 x 105 N/mm2. [8M]
b) Define compound bar and thermal stresses. [8M]
3. A point is subjected to a tensile stress of 250 N/mm2 and a shear stress of 100 N/mm2. Determine the normal and tangential stresses on a plane inclined at an angle of 30o with the tensile stress. Also find the maximum shear stress and the planes on which they act. [16M]

4. A simply supported beam of length 6m, carries a uniformly distributed load of 2kN/m over the entire length and a point load of 3kN at a distance of 2m from the right support. Draw the S.F and B.M diagrams for the beam and also determine the maximum bending moment. [16M]
5. A cast iron beam is of I-section with top flange 80mm x 20mm, bottom flange 160mm x 40mm and the web 20mm x 100mm. If the tensile stress is not to exceed 30N/mm2 and compressive stress is not to exceed 90N/mm2, what is the maximum uniformly distributed load the beam can carry over a simply supported span of 6 meters if the larger flange is in tension. [16M]
6. A solid shaft of 200mm diameter has the same cross sectional area as of a hollow shaft of the same material with inside diameter of 150mm. Find the ratio of the power transmitted by the two shafts to the same speed. [16M]
