Case Study - 53 to 56 (Question Id - 93)
In the field of science, one of the distinguished names is that of Madame Marie Curie. She, along
with her husband, Pierre Curie, discovered radium that is widely used in the treatment of cancer. Pierre
and Marie's amicable collaboration later helped to unlock the secrets of the atom.
Born in 1867 in Warsaw, Poland, Marie displayed a brilliant and blithe personality at an early age.
Her great exuberance for learning prompted her to continue with her studies after school. She became
disgruntled, however, when she learned that the university in Warsaw was closed to women.
Determined to receive a higher education, she defiantly left Poland and in 1891 entered Sorbonne, a
French university, where she earned her master's degree and doctorate in Physics.
In 1895 Marie got married to Pierre Curie, another scientist, and together they spent many
productive years working together in the physics laboratory. After they discovered radium, Pierre was
killed by a horse drawn wagon in 1906. Marie endured heartbreaking anguish and the fact that she had
two young daughters to raise by herself greatly increased her distress.
Curie's feeling of desolation finally began to fade when she was made a physics professor at
Sorbonne, becoming the first woman professor at the world famous university. In 1911, she was
awarded the Nobel Prize for isolating radium. The long exposure to radium caused a fatal illness to her
