We take them for granted, as if we were entitled to them as a matter of right. We are very proud of the fact that we live in an advanced age and are ourselves very advanced. Now, there is no doubt that our age is very different from previous ages and I think it is perfectly correct to say that is far more advanced. Liquids are practically incompressible. Unlike gases but like solids, a liquid does not change much in volume when the pressure on it is changed, even when the pressures of thousands of atmospheres are involved. The kinetic theory accounts for this saying that the amount of free space between the molecules of a liquid has been reduced almost to a minimum. Any attempt to compress the liquid meets with resistance as the electron cloud of one molecule repels the electron cloud of the adjacent molecule.
