PART - B (50 Marks)

  1. 2. a) Explain the U-tube differential manometer. [5M]

    b) A circular plate 3 m diameter is submerged in water, with its greatest and least depths below the surface being 2 m and 1 m respectively. Determine the total pressure on one face of the plate and the position of the centre of pressure. [5M]

    3. a) Explain the stability conditions for floating bodies. [5M]

    b) A metallic body floats at the interface of mercury and water such that 30 percent of its volume is submerged in mercury and 70 percent in water. If the density of water is 1000 kg/m3, find the density of the metallic body. [5M]

  2. 4. a) Derive the Bernoulli’s equation from Euler’s equation. [5M]

    b) A pipe line carries oil of specific gravity 0.87 at a rate of 2000 liters per minute. A venturi meter is installed in the pipe line to measure the flow rate. The throat diameter is 10 cm and pipe diameter is 20 cm. The pressure difference between the upstream and the throat is measured by a U-tube manometer containing mercury. Calculate the reading of the mercury manometer. Assume coefficient of discharge as 0.98. [5M]

    b) The stream function for a two dimensional flow is given by ? = 2xy, calculate the velocity at the point P(2, 3). Find the velocity potential function. [5M]

  3. 6. a) Derive the expression for loss of head due to sudden enlargement. [5M]

    b) Two reservoirs are connected by a pipeline 1500 m long. For the first 1000 m length, the pipe diameter is 20 cm and then the diameter is suddenly enlarged to 40 cm for the remaining length. Water level in the upper reservoir is 30 m higher than that in the lower reservoir. Determine the discharge. Consider all losses. Take f = 0.04 for both sections of the pipe. [5M]

    7. a) Explain the boundary layer separation and its control methods. [5M]

    b) A flat plate 2m wide and 4m long is kept parallel to air flowing at 5m/s. Determine the drag force on the plate if the coefficient of drag is 0.004. Take density of air as 1.2 kg/m3. [5M]

  4. 8. a) Explain the working principle of Kaplan turbine with a neat sketch. [5M]

    b) A turbine is to operate under a head of 25 m at 200 r.p.m. The discharge is 9 m3/s. If the turbine efficiency is 90%, determine:

  5. 10. a) Explain the working principle of a centrifugal pump with a neat sketch. [5M]

    b) A centrifugal pump delivers 50 liters of water per second to a height of 20 meters through a 150 mm diameter and 100 m long pipe line. If the overall efficiency of the pump is 75%, determine the power required to drive the pump. Assume f = 0.012 for the pipe line. [5M]

    11. a) Explain the working principle of a hydraulic press with a neat sketch. [5M]

    b) A hydraulic intensifier has a ram of 30 cm diameter and a piston of 4.5 cm diameter. If it is used to intensify the pressure of water from 1 MN/m2 to 4 MN/m2, find the force required on the ram. [5M]
