Object - to prepare and dispense 50ml of potassium permanganate lotion.

1. Calculate the amount of potassium permanganate required.
   1:5000 Ratio means - 1gm of potassium permanganate in 5000ml water
   1000 mg potassium permanganate in 5000ml solution
   50ml solution - 10 mg potassium
2. Calculate the amount of stock solution required.

   1% KMnO4 (1gm KMnO4 in 100ml of solution)
   10mg KMnO4 is present in 1ml of stock solution

Method -

Prepare stock solution by dissolving 100mg of KMnO4 in 100ml of water in a glass mortar. Then take 1ml solution and add water up to 50ml. Transfer it to dispensing bottle, put cork and label it.

1. 1:100 Solution is used in mycotic infection such as athlete's foot.
2. 1:200 Solution for stomach wash in morphine and phosphorus poisoning.
3. 1:1000 to 1:4000 Solution is used as a clinging application for sterilization of instruments.
4. 1:5000 to 1:10,000 Solution is used as eye wash, mouth wash, stomach wash in case of alkaloid poisoning, wet dressing, as an antiseptic in urethral and vaginal infection.
5. Direct crystals are topically applied in snake bite at the site of bite.

6. Used as styptic 5% (1:20) to prevent local bleeding.

Precautions -

1. Lotions are dispensed in light resistant bottles, photosensitive.
2. For external use only.

• It causes rusting, thus not suitable for disinfecting instruments.
• At higher concentration, it stains the skin and clothes. May cause burn or blister on skin.
• Activity is reduced in presence of organic matter and oral ingestion cause gastric irritation, renal and coma.
