Africa was indeed the dark continent in those days. for although Europeans had touched lilL?
coast the whole interior was unknown. Three great rivers. the Nile. the Zambesi. the Congo pOlll'L?L]
out of that primeval darkness but no white man had ever discovered their origin. Out of that darkness
poured that terrible stream of human misery. the slaves which the Arab and Portuguese mulch
secured: men, women and children whose freedom had been bartered for bright beads or other Irillcs
in this merciless trade.
David Livingstone realised that if anything were to be done for the Africans. the slave trade must
be stopped. Somebody must clear wide paths of civilization through the Dark Continent and the \\Ll_\
must be made for protective flag and fair trade. Trade and ?ag were the means of salvation m
millions of human beings.
The mill-boy turned missionary moved into a new phase. He became the greatest explorer n:
Africa. He penetrated theunknown. He thus left a path for others to follow.
