STRENGTH OF MATERIALS-I

(Civil Engineering)

Time: 3 Hours Max. Marks: 70

Note: 1. Question Paper consists of two parts (Part-A and Part-B)
2. Answer ALL the question in Part-A

--- Content provided by FirstRanker.com ---

3. Answer any THREE Questions from Part-B

PART-A

1. a) Define: Elasticity and Elastic limit. [2M]
b) Define: Poisson’s ratio. [2M]
c) Define: Shear force and Bending Moment. [2M]
d) What is meant by point of contra flexure? [2M]

--- Content provided by‍ FirstRanker.com ---

e) Define: Section Modulus. [2M]
f) Define: Slop and Deflection. [2M]
g) What are the assumptions made in Euler’s column theory? [2M]

PART-B

2. a) A steel rod of 3 cm diameter and 5 m long is connected to two grips and the rod is maintained at a temperature of 95°C. Determine the stress and pull exerted on the grips when the temperature falls to 30°C. Take E = 2 × 105 MN/m2 and a = 12 × 10-6/°C. [8M]
b) Derive the relationship between Modulus of Elasticity (E), Modulus of Rigidity (G) and Bulk Modulus (K). [8M]

3. Draw the Shear force and Bending Moment diagram for the beam shown in figure. [16M]

4. A cast iron beam is of T-section with top flange 80 mm × 20 mm thick, web 120 mm × 20 mm thick and bottom flange 160 mm × 40 mm thick. If the tensile stress is not to exceed 30 N/mm2 and compressive stress 90 N/mm2, what is the maximum uniformly distributed load the beam can carry over a simple span of 6 meters if the flange is in tension? [16M]

5. A beam of length 6 m is simply supported at its ends and carries two point loads of 48 kN and 40 kN at a distance of 1 m and 3 m respectively from the left support. Using Macaulay’s method determine:
i) Deflection under each load [8M]
ii) Maximum deflection [8M]

--- Content provided by FirstRanker.com ---

iii) The point at which maximum deflection occurs.
Take E = 2 × 105 N/mm2 and I = 85 × 106 mm4.

6. A hollow cast iron column, whose outside diameter is 200 mm has a thickness of 20 mm. It is 4.5 m long and is fixed at both ends. Calculate the safe load by Rankine-Gordon formula using a factor of safety of 4. Find also the Euler’s critical load. Take sc = 550 N/mm2 and a = 1/1600 in Rankine’s formula and E = 8 × 104 N/mm2. [16M]
