VISAKHAPATNAM: The state government is planning to set up an Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) here. While the other IIITs at Nuzvid, Idupulapaya and Basar are beset with various problems, the move to set up another IIIT in the port city has come as a surprise.
The government has asked the district administration to identify a suitable land for setting up the institution. The revenue officials have started scouring for 100 acres of land in Sabbavaram, Parawada, Bhimili, Anandapuram and Pendurthy mandals, all abutting the city.
Sources said Sabbavaram has a major chunk of government land in comparison to other mandals. The tehsildar of Sabbavaram mandal visited Antakapalli, Lagisettipalem and Vangali villages to look out for a suitable location for setting up the IIIT.
The district was already allotted the law university and maritime university by the government. “If IIIT comes into a reality, Visakhapatnam will become a national-level centre for education in the coming years,” a senior academic observed.
