AU authorities vacate hostels to check unrest

Visakhapatnam, Dec. 24: The Andhra University authorities closed down all the hostels and vacated rooms as a preventive measure to check any unrest after Srikrishna Committee submitted its report on December 31.

The university has over 3,400 students pursuing their studies in engineering, arts, commerce and law. The research scholars and foreign students were however were allowed to stay back.

The students normally stay back in the hostels during winter vacation and prepare for their final examination and some who had completed their studies prepare for competitive examinations.

Last year, the students formed Samaikhya Andhra Students Joint Action Committee and staged serious dharnas. Some of them launched an indefinite fast and shifted to hospital. Top political leaders called on the striking students expressing their support.
