The Information Techno-logy department may deny that the Telangana imbroglio has had an adverse effect on the IT sector, but the fact remains that the ambitious project to set up IT incubation towers in tier-II cities like Warangal, Tirupati and Visakhapatnam, on the lines of the cyber towers in Hyderabad, has found no takers. Also, not a single new application for setting up IT SEZs in and around Hyderabad has been received in the last couple of months. Despite the State government promoting tier-II destinations with adequate incentives, the industry has remained aloof from tier-II destinations, leave alone tier-III destinations. Among the tier-II destinations, Visakhapatnam is the only one generating some interest.
Tenders were called about four months ago but not a single developer has shown interest in the project. The department has now asked APIIC to revise and refloat tenders by quoting a lower base amount. “It is four months now since the tenders were called for but as there is no response, we are assuming that the base price might have been very high. We have asked APIIC to lower the base price and call for tenders once again,” said Mr Sanjay Jaju, secretary, IT department. While there are no big, new projects coming up, many SEZs in the peripheral areas in the city are lying vacant as well.
