The state government will submit to the AP High Court a schedule for reimbursement of tuition fees to private professional colleges.
Briefing mediapersons about the government?s decision, the social welfare minister, Mr P. Subash Chandrabose, said the government has also decided to clear all the arrears to the college managements before October 10. The arrears are likely to be around `250 crore, he added.
The government is filing the schedule on the instructions of the Supreme Court.
It may be recalled that the High Court had given an interim order directing the
state government to reimburse the tuition fees at the time of admissions. The state government then approached the Supreme Court, which directed the government to make payments to the private college managements in a specified time period. The advocate-general and the officials concerned will hold consultations on the schedule and the former has also been asked to take steps to expedite the hearing in the main appeal pending before the High Court.
The minister also said the government would soon bring legislation providing legal sanctity and statute to the fee reimbursement scheme. The main objective of the legislation is to instill confidence among students that the Congress government is committed to helping the poor pursue professional courses.
The backward class welfare minister, Mr M.
Mukesh Goud, the tribal welfare minister, Mr P.
Balaraju and the health minister, Mr D. Nagender, were also present.
