  • ISB student’s plan wins P&G grant in global competition

HYDERABAD: A non-profit business plan proposed by Tanushree Jana, a student of the 2011 batch at the Indian School of Business (ISB) here, to bring 200 people out of poverty by helping small and marginal SC/ST farmers in Karnataka, won a grant of $10,000 (Rs.4.5 lakh) recently in the Procter & Gamble International Social Venture Competition.

This is the second time in a row that Ms. Tanushree has won funds in the competition. The plan proposed to help the farmers by installing Lift Irrigation Systems (LIS). While the Philanthropy Committee received 54 applications with requests for funding over $ 6,85,000, it approved grants of $ 50,000 for five projects from as many countries.

Last year, her plan bagged a grant for $ 9,000 for a Bangalore-based NGO called Yuvalok. The plan sought to impart tailoring skills to 20 women living in slums.

The training helped them earn between Rs.5,000 and Rs.8,000 a month by working in government factories or by working on their own, according to Ms.Tanushree.

Every year, the P&G Alumni Philanthropy fund organises a competition which is open to all P&G alumni.
