May 21: For the second year in a row, Hyderabad earned the dubious distinction of being at the bottom of the SSC pile. While the state average was 83.10 per cent, Hyderabad secured a pass percentage of only 72.76 in the SSC results that were declared on Saturday. District officials, however, blamed private schools, which constitute 90 per cent of the total schools in the district, for the poor show.
Ironically, the Hyderabad collector, Mr Natarajan Gulzar, had announced several incentives like holiday tours for officials and teachers during summer vacations to improve the results this year after last year’s dismal performance. However, his efforts proved futile with the city again staying at the bottom in the results table.
The DEO, MEOs and other officials in the department are likely to be axed for the poor show. Last year, while the state average was 81.63 per cent, Hyderabad had a pass percentage of 71.79. District education officials had initiated several steps to improve the results. They had introduced weekly tests, monthly tests and pre-final tests apart from supplying free study material. Despite all this, the results increased by a meagre 0.97 per cent over last year.
Mr Gulzar said that the poor results were on account of students in private schools in the district. “Unless the private schools improve their performance, we cannot get good results. Normally in other districts, 90 per cent of the students take admissions in government schools and 10 per cent in private schools. In Hyderabad, it’s the other way round. We will review the results and initiate steps for improving the results next year,” he said.
