VCs meet soon to discuss academic calander.

HYDERABAD : In the run up to the submission of Srikrishna Committee report, the minister for higher education, Damodar Rajanarasimha has called for a detailed discussion on the academic plan with vice-chancellors of all universities. The one-to-one meetings will begin on December 24 and will go on till December 30.

The vice-chancellors of Osmania University, Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University and Kakatiya University will make their appearance before the minister in some of the first slots. The next slots will be followed by other universities from the Telangana region.

According to sources, the minister is planning to chalk out a plan to tackle `T’ trouble in these campuses following the submission of Srikrishna Committee report. The minister might also fix a timeframe for Sankranti vacation during the meeting.

“The minister was expected to have a joint meeting of all vice-chancellors on November 24 but so far no official communication about the same has reached the VCs. Instead, he has decided to meet vice-chancellors in his chambers during different time slots,” said an official from higher education department. The discussions will also include special sessions on tackling the Osmania University (OU) protesters.

According to sources, the minister is likely to decide on a common academic calender for all universities. “The vice-chancellors might also be asked to prevent political tensions on the campuses in the state,” said an official from higher education department. This will be the minister’s first meeting with the VCs after taking charge.

The vice-chancellors will also be asked to call for police protection of university property and staff in case of trouble. “There is no proposal as such to prevent police from entering the university campuses. However,vice-chancellors will be given the powers to decide on when to call police,” said officials.

It is learnt that the minister has already had discussions with chancellor of the state universities and governor of the state, E S L Narasimhan about his plan on bringing in order in Telangana universities.

Meanwhile, students of affiliated colleges of Osmania University staged a protest even on Tuesday before the administrative building. The students were demanding for a postponement of semester examinations of MCA and M Ed courses. Police, who were deputed around the OU administrative block, however, stopped the students from entering the premises. The university officials have not postponed the examinations for the two courses.
