    Icet colleges try to lower entry marks!

    In a last-ditch effort to avert closure of several MBA and MCA colleges due to poor intake, the college managements are lobbying with the state government to allow them to admit in the convener?s quota those students who did not take the Integrated Common Entrance Test (Icet).

    Under the existing rules, a student must get 25 per cent in Icet (that is, 50 marks out of a total 200 marks) to qualify for admission to MBA and MCA courses in the convener?s quota.

    As many as 366 MCA colleges and 100 MBA colleges are headed for closure this year with less than 10 admissions.

    MCA colleges are the worst hit with 62 per cent vacancies. Of the total 34,451 seats in the convener?s quota in 660 MCA colleges, only 13,104 have been filled. In 74 MCA colleges not a single seat was filled. The situation is slightly better in the 892 MBA colleges where out of a total of 52,588 seats in the convener?s quota, 44,105 were filled.

    Meanwhile, the government will conduct the second phase of Icet counselling from September 24 to 27. Of the 1.5 lakh candidates who qualified, nearly 1 lakh stayed away from the counselling in the first phase.

    The Board of Intermediate Education (BIE) has sent the list of candidates, eligible for the newly introduced scholarship scheme by the Government of India, to the concerned junior colleges apart from placing all the details on its website ? www.bieap.gov.in.

    The candidates have been provisionally selected based on their performance in the Intermediate examinations this year. Selected candidates have to apply for the scholarship given for a maximum period of five years for the degree courses or professional courses.

    The BIE Secretary has said that the Central government has allotted 6,097 scholarships for the State and they have been allotted in the ratio of 3:2:1 for Science, Commerce and Humanities streams and in the ratio of 1:1 for boys and girls.

    Candidates who have cleared the Intermediate examinations in March 2010 and whose parental income is less than Rs. 4.5 lakh per annum are eligible. They should be pursuing regular or professional bachelor degree courses in recognised educational institutions in the current year and also not be availing any other scholarship. Selected candidates will be paid Rs. 1,000 per month for three years and Rs. 2,000 per month in the fourth and fifth years of the course for 10 months in an academic year.

    Students can approach the principals of colleges where they have studied their Intermediate for application forms and they can also be downloaded from the BIE website ? www.bieap.gov.in and application forms should be submitted through the concerned college principal before October 11. Candidates who have cleared Intermediate before March 2010 are not eligible for these scholarships.
