JNTU to relax credits for Telangana hit students
Dec 27th
Hyderabad: Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University, Hyderabad (JNTU-H) is planning to relax the number of credits needed by students to get a promotion to the next year. The decision was taken in view of the ongoing separate Telangana agitation in the city. While currently 50 per cent of the total credits (unit of marks) are required to pass from one year to another, for students who went through the Telangana turmoil, the required percentage might be just 40 to 45.
The university authorities have set up a committee to look into the damage on the academic activities on campus to decide on what should be the required pass percentage for academic year 2009-10. The exams of JNTU for the year are scheduled to be held from Jan 2 as they got postponed due to separate Telangana struggle in the state.
“We will decide the percentage of reduction only in 2010 depending upon the number of students who failed due to their academic disruptions. While the decision will be taken only in the next year, we assure the students that they do not have to worry about how the turmoil in the state will affect their grades,” said D N Reddy, vice-chancellor, JNTU, Hyderabad.

JNTU students mail bomb threats in V-C’s name
HYDERABAD: Detained students of the Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University-Hyderabad (JNTUH) are suspected to have sent out email threats to Technical Education Minister MV Ramana, Andhra Pradesh Council for Higher Education chairman KC Reddy and their own vice-chancellor DN Reddy.
According to DN Reddy, unknown persons have created a fake email address on his name by using false information and have sent threatening emails to the Minister, APSCHE chairman KC Reddy and also to his original email address.
In their email, the miscreants reportedly demanded that the authorities retain about 2,500 students of JNTUH who were detained during the first semester of the academic year 2009-10 due to shortage of attendance.
The offenders allegedly threatened to bomb the State Legislative Assembly and the JNTU main building apart from poisoning the drinking water tank in the main campus. They also threatened to attack the recipients unless they take immediate action and retain students without damaging their academic year for reasons like poor attendance.
“We knew that it was an act of mischief by students. But they have been sending the same threats through email everyday that too on my name. I am lodging a complaint with the Inspector General of Police (Intelligence) to take action,” DN Reddy told reporters here on Wednesday. He lodged a complaint with the police along with the copies of emails received by him and sought action against the offenders.
Meanwhile, the email threats were issued even as the JNTUH officials were discussing the issue with the college managements. The detained students form nearly two per cent of the total number of students studying in colleges affiliated to the University. The University authorities are planning to conduct extra classes for students who were detained during the current academic year.
India among key educational destinations for Americans
Nov 18th
Washington, Nov 17 (IANS) India is among five nations that have emerged as key educational destinations for US students wanting to study abroad, a new survey said. With a record number of US students studying abroad, India alongwith China, Japan, South Africa and Argentina have emerged as the most favoured educational destinations. According to the Open Doors 2009 survey by the Institute of International Education released Monday, the number of Americans studying abroad increased by 8.5 percent to 262,416 in the 2007/08 academic year. The survey shows that the number of students to nearly all of the top 25 destinations increased, notably to destinations less traditional for study abroad: China, Ireland, Austria and India (up about 20 percent each), as well as Costa Rica, Japan, Argentina and South Africa (up nearly 15 percent each). At the same time, the number of international students at colleges and universities in the United States increased by 8 percent to an all-time high of 671,616 in the 2008/09 academic year while the number of ‘new’ international students – those enrolled for the first time at a US college or university in fall 2008 – increased by 16 percent. This represents the largest percentage increase in international student enrolments since 1980/81. According to separate joint survey conducted by eight leading higher education associations, overall enrolments of international students increased this autumn at half (50 percent or 348) of responding member campuses. For the first time, the number of institutions reporting increases in students from India do not outweigh those who are reporting declines (29 percent reporting increases and 29 percent reporting declines). When looking specifically at the largest host institutions (those 121 responding institutions enrolling more than 1,000 students), 50 percent of responding institutions are reporting a decline for students from India and only 31 percent are reporting an increase. ‘Despite the economic downturn, many campuses are still seeing increases in international student enrollment for Fall 2009, while others are seeing declines or flattening of enrollments,’ said Allan E. Goodman, President and CEO of the Institute of International Education (IIE). ‘The impact also varies by country, with reported declining enrolments from India and a few other countries offset on many campuses by surging numbers of students coming from China and strong increases from certain other major sending countries,’ he said.
