- A 55 year old man with hepatic cirrhosis and portal hypertension is brought to the emergency room with haematemesis. On examination he is drowsy, pulse is feeble, heart rate is 120/minute. He is scheduled for emergency upper gastrointestinal endoscopy and banding of oesophageal varices under general anaesthesia.
