Africa was indeed the dark continent in those days, for although Europeans had touched the coast the whole interior was unknown. Three great rivers, the Nile, the Zambesi, the Congo poured out of that primeval darkness but no white man had ever discovered their origin. Out of that darkness poured that terrible stream of human misery, the slaves which the Arab and Portuguese traders secured: men, women and children whose freedom had been bartered for bright beads or other trifles in this merciless trade.

David Livingstone realised that if anything were to be done for the Africans, the slave trade must be stopped. Somebody must clear wide paths of civilization through the Dark Continent and the way must be made for protective flag and fair trade. Trade and flag were the means of salvation for millions of human beings.

The mill-boy turned missionary moved into a new phase. He became the greatest explorer in Africa. He penetrated the unknown. He thus left a path for others to follow.

The problem which most preoccupies the public mind at the present moment is that of scientific warfare. It has become evident that if scientific skill is allowed free scope, the human race will be totally destroyed. To this problem there are two possible reactions: there are those who say. "Let us create social institutions which will make large scale war impossible; there are others who say Let us not allow war to become too scientific. I do not think that there will long continue to be human beings unless methods are found for permanently preventing large scale wars.

The law and the police prevent man from committing crimes. But the relation between nations are not governed by law and cannot be until there is a supernational armed force strong enough to enforce the decisions of a supernational authority. In the past, although the wars resulting from international anarchy caused much suffering and destruction, mankind was able to survive them. Today, however, the risks of war have become so great that the continued existence of our species has either become or will soon become impossible in the face of the new methods of scientific destruction.
