Seidlitz Powder

Object: To prepare and dispense a single dose of seidlitz powder.

It is so named because its content represents the principle constituents of seidlitz spring in N.E (Czechoslovakia).

Method: Take 7.5 gm of sodium potassium tartrate and 2.5 gm of sodium bicarbonate in the mortar, powder them and pack in packet no. 1. Then take 2.5 gm of tartaric acid in the mortar and powder it and pack in the packet no. 2. Finally, pack these 2 packets in a larger one and label it.

Rationale of individual ingredients:

  1. Sodium potassium tartrate: White crystalline powder with a saline taste and unabsorbable. It is used as an osmotic laxative and watery evacuation in 3-6 hours (Saline cathartic).
  2. Sodium bicarbonate: It reacts with tartaric acid to produce CO2 and sodium tartrate and produce effervescence, which masks the saline taste of sodium potassium tartrate. Sodium tartrate so formed also acts as a saline cathartic.
  3. Tartaric acid: It is a hygroscopic enhancer, colourless white powder reacts with sodium bicarbonate and revolves CO2. It is used as a saline purgative.
