Online counselling for admissions into the Bachelor of Physical Education (BPEd) course was stalled on Sunday after a section of students ransacked the counselling centre at the JNTU, Kukatpally, demanding 42 per cent quota for students from the Telangana region.
Owing to the attacks, officials postponed the process across the state including at Hyderabad,Vijayawada, Visakhapatnam and Tirupati. Tension prevailed as students attacked the JNTU counselling centre and damaged the furniture.
Police rushed to the spot and secured the situation.
Trouble began when students from the region raised slogans against officials who were conducting counselling, alleging that they had deliberately allotted fewer seats for students from Telangana.
The students demanded that of the 7,000 BPEd seats available across the state, 42 per cent should be reserved for T-students.
The officials tried in vain to pacify the students saying that the seat allotment is done as per the norms laid by the government and that there is no question of injustice being meted to any region.
However, the students were not convinced argued with officials. The students then damaged the furniture at the counselling centre, forcing postponement of the process.
